Introduction Chronic respiratory diseases, for example, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide.1 Tobacco smoking adversely affects the progression and prognosis of both diseases by triggering inflammation and airway remodelling, accelerating lung function decline and increasing the risk of exacerbations.26 Smoking prevention and cessation are therefore crucial in the management of patients with asthma and COPD.2 3 Smoking cessation encouragement, counselling and associated pharmacotherapy have been shown to be effective, as they reduce daily symptoms and decrease the frequency of exacerbations.2 3 6 7 Nevertheless, despite widespread awareness of the harms of smoking and numerous initiatives promoting cessation, quitting remains challenging.6 Previous research highlighted the potential of using teachable moments to improve the success of smoking cessation.8 9 Teachable moments are defined as specific times when individuals may be particularly open to behavioural change.8 9 These moments are often triggered by significant health events or diagnoses, which may influence patients motivation/behavioural interest in quitting
