In 2020, the Canadian Cannabis Survey found that 27% of Canadian adults used cannabis in the last 12 months, with provincial and territorial estimates ranging from 21% to 37%.13 Thus, the current study shows that our sample of adults who smoke cigarettes report using cannabis at a higher average rate than the general adult population, which is consistent with other studies in the US,25 the United Kingdom26 and Canada.24 , 50 The percentage of participants who screened positive for depressive symptoms in our sample was 30%, which is higher than the rate of Canadians who report mental illness,51 including depression, in the general population.52 Studies have shown that adults who smoke cigarettes have higher levels of depression than people who do not smoke.6 We found that a higher percentage of respondents using cannabis reported depressive symptoms (37%) than respondents who were not currently using cannabis (28%)
