Nicotine use has not gone away, but the products people choose are clearly changing
Smokers who are exposed to higher levels of arsenic from food and water sources are far more likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases than either non-smokers or smokers who are exposed to lower levels
In fact, smoking meat for up to 24 hours is not unusual when it comes to this method of cooking
While smoking rates in the UK are on the decline - according to the ONS, in 2022, 12.9 per cent, or 6.4 million people, smoked, down from 13.3 per cent in 2021 - the invention and widespread use of e-cigarettes means that a new generation of smokers has emerged, with young women the most likely demographic to vape daily
While higher prices may deter some youth from using e-cigarettes, given the apparently large current appetite for black-market vapes that the EVALI epidemic revealed, coupled with the evidence from tobacco taxes and ITTP, it seems very likely that high taxes on e-cigarettes will drive more youth demand toward less reputable and potentially much more dangerous sources
